GREEN RIBBON CAMPAIGN
      It's our nature to conserve

For Earth Day 2008, we worked with the Stanley Park Ecology Centre to do invasive plant removal. The damage sustained during the wind storm earlier that year created an opportunity for invasive plant species to propagate. A crew of volunteers work wonders clearing up various areas within Stanley Park.

For Earth Day 2007, we ran an invasive species removal at MacKay Creek in North Vancouver. This was done in conjunction with the District of North Vancouver Parks Department. After a fun session of pulling out weeds and removing them from the area, native plant species were planted. This was a great opportunity for everyone to take part in restoring local habitats.

We spent  Earth day 2006 at Inter-River Park in North Vancouver.  In this park, native plants and animals compete for space with walkers, cyclists and dogs and the areas around the trail were beginning to suffer from overuse.  Together with 10 volunteers we planted over 500 native trees and plants where the original flaura had been trampled.  The results were a more beautiful and healthy trail for all to enjoy.

In 2005 we worked on a steep part of the trail that had become a dangerous spot for hikers and cyclists. The soil had eroded and exposed a slope with many odd shaped rocks and stones embedded into the compacted earth. We turned this danger zone into a usable trail by creating steps and filling them with gravel and earth. To prevent erosion on the forest area around the trail we planted native trees and plants on either side to discourage park users from straying off the trail.

In 2004 we successfully decommissioned an old unhealthy trail. The old trail had eroded so far that tree roots became exposed. The combination of exposed roots and heavy usage would have lead to the death of a number of large trees and a safety hazard for park users. We revived the earth around the old trail and planted native plants and trees over top to let users know that it was no longer a trail. The new trail that we built is now safe for trees, hikers and nature lovers.
